A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the reported attack on the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Edo State was orchestrated by government forces or their agents.
Okonkwo made the allegation on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, while reacting to the gunmen attack on Obi’s convoy earlier in the day.
According to him, the incident amounted to an attempted assassination allegedly carried out by the government or its proxies.
He stated that he had been in contact with former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, who provided details regarding the alleged attack.
Okonkwo further recalled a previous warning issued by the current Edo State Governor, cautioning Obi against entering the state without official clearance and stating that his security would not be guaranteed.
He noted that the warning had earlier been discussed publicly as a potential threat to opposition figures. He explained that the incident occurred as supporters gathered to welcome Olumide Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, when the group reportedly encountered a convoy of about ten vehicles led by a pilot vehicle.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Edo State Government regarding the allegations.
