Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been caught in Guinea-Bissau amid a sudden military takeover that has plunged the country into uncertainty.
Jonathan was in the West African nation for a peace mission ahead of post-election engagements when soldiers moved to seize control of major government institutions and halted the ongoing electoral process.
Earlier on Wednesday, heavy gunfire echoed across Bissau as the military announced it had taken power to “restore order,” shutting all borders and placing senior political figures under tight security.
Diplomatic sources confirm that efforts are currently underway to secure Jonathan’s safety and arrange his evacuation as the situation continues to unfold.
