Veteran Nigerian rapper, Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I, has alleged that a significant portion of funding for the country’s music industry comes from internet fraudsters and foreign sources.
Speaking as a guest on the So Nigerian podcast, M.I described the situation as a national embarrassment, stressing that Nigeria must improve its domestic support for the creative sector.
“There’s a lot of controversy when people talk about ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ because, for a lot of artists, that’s the funding they have,” he said. “It’s an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians, yet the major funding for the industry comes from the West and the fraud industry. It shows that something is wrong. Hopefully, we can do better.”
