Social media influencer and actor, Belema Nelson Onikio, has called on Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to deepen people-focused governance by prioritising critical infrastructure, power generation, and investments in the creative and agricultural sectors.
In an open message addressed to the governor, Onikio acknowledged several achievements of the current administration, including the provision of welfare packages for civil servants, the approval for the recruitment of 5,000 teachers, and the execution of completed and ongoing road projects across the state.
He, however, stressed that “there can be more,” noting that Rivers people are willing to stand with the governor politically, but need tangible developments that directly impact daily living.
Onikio questioned the relevance of constructing a Commissioners’ Quarters at a time when the state lacks its own power generation plant, arguing that electricity infrastructure should be a higher priority. He referenced Abia State’s power project as a landmark initiative and stated that Rivers State has the resources to achieve a similar feat.
The influencer also urged the government to harness the state’s creative potential by establishing an entertainment village equipped with film set locations and creative hubs, saying such an initiative would position Rivers as a standout destination in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Highlighting Rivers State’s rich cultural heritage, Onikio pointed to events such as the Bole Festival, Onunu Festival, Garri Fest, and others, calling for a more enabling environment and increased government support to help these festivals thrive.
He further appealed for the renovation and upgrade of hospitals and schools built under former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as well as renewed attention to agricultural projects including the banana plantation and the Songhai Fish Farm.
Onikio concluded by urging Governor Fubara to look beyond political appointees and focus more deeply on the needs of ordinary citizens, noting that the people need to feel the impact of governance beyond surface-level achievements.
“I will keep praying for you,” he added.
