The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 associations have scaled the first stage of screening in their bid to be registered as political parties.
The decision followed a meeting of the Commission on Thursday, September 11, 2025, where reports of its Committee on the Review of Letters of Intent from associations seeking registration were considered.
INEC disclosed that out of 171 applications received, only 14 met the preliminary requirements, while 157 failed to satisfy constitutional and legal provisions.
According to the Commission, the successful associations will undergo physical verification of their claims before a final decision on their registration is made. INEC also noted that the list of the pre-qualified associations has been published on its website and other official platforms.
The interim chairmen and secretaries of the shortlisted associations have been invited to a briefing scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
INEC stressed that political party registration is a continuous process and reaffirmed its commitment to considering applications that meet the criteria stipulated in the Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and its guidelines.
The statement was signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee
