The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over the increasing trend of early political campaigns by politicians and their supporters, describing it as a blatant violation of existing electoral laws.
Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Board of The Electoral Institute (TEI), made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja during a stakeholders’ roundtable titled “The Challenges of Premature Political Campaigns.”
He noted that such early campaigns are often disguised as “appreciation” events or philanthropic activities, promoted through billboards, social media platforms, and even in-person gatherings.
Prof. Zuru emphasized the need for stricter adherence to electoral regulations to ensure a level playing field for all political actors ahead of elections.
