The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the success of the 2027 general elections will largely depend on its ability to gain the confidence of millions of young Nigerians who will be voting for the first time.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, made this known on Friday in Lagos while delivering his opening address at the commission’s 2026 induction and strategic retreat for national commissioners, resident electoral commissioners, and senior officials.
Amupitan noted that the 2027 elections will be significantly influenced by a new demographic of voters—young, digitally savvy Nigerians—whom he described as digital natives with a high level of skepticism toward public institutions.
According to him, these young voters have “little patience for opacity” and expect transparency, accountability, and efficiency from the electoral process.
He emphasized that building and sustaining trust among this group is critical to the credibility of the electoral process and the overall success of the 2027 polls, urging INEC officials to adapt to evolving public expectations and strengthen institutional integrity.
