The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised the deadline for political parties to submit their registers of members in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The adjustment follows concerns raised during a meeting with political parties on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, over the original timeline, which scheduled the submission from 1st to 21st April 2026.
According to the Commission, the new schedule aligns with the 21-day requirement under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, giving parties flexibility to fix their primary election dates within the approved window from 23rd April to 30th May 2026.
INEC emphasized that the register of party members must now be submitted at least 21 days before the holding of each party’s primaries. Consequently, the final deadline for submission has been extended from 21st April to 10th May 2026.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, urged all political parties to adhere strictly to the revised timeline to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process
