The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating online that results were manipulated at Kuroko Health Centre polling unit in Yangoji Ward, Kwali Area Council during Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.
In a press release issued by the INEC FCT office on February 24, 2026, the Commission refuted allegations that a political party recorded 1,219 votes in the polling unit despite having only 345 registered voters and 213 accredited voters.
INEC clarified that the controversy stemmed from a clerical error made by the Presiding Officer while entering the party’s score.
According to the Commission, after sorting and counting the ballots, the officer initially recorded 122 votes for the party. However, upon reconciling the figures, an overcount of one vote was discovered.
The ballots were recounted openly at the polling unit, where it was confirmed that the party scored 121 votes, not 122. The Presiding Officer corrected the error on the result sheet, adjusting both the numerical and written figures accordingly.
The Commission emphasised that the official result uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) clearly shows that the party scored 121 votes — not 1,219 as alleged on social media. It added that party agents present at the polling unit signed the corrected result, which was subsequently used for collation at the ward and Area Council levels.
INEC further explained that its result management system, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and IReV portal, makes such alleged manipulation technically impossible.
