The President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Theophilus Alaye, has rejected any purported single-term agreement as a condition for the reinstatement of suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Alaye, who made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, insisted that Governor Fubara retains the constitutional right to seek a second term and should not be coerced into relinquishing that right by any political figure, including his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, is a citizen of Nigeria and, by virtue of the Nigerian Constitution, has the right to seek re-election,” Alaye said.
He dismissed reports suggesting that Fubara’s potential return to office was tied to a one-term agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu, describing such claims as speculative. Alaye maintained that the IYC stands firmly behind the governor and would support him should he choose to contest again in 2027.
“When we get to 2027, we shall know if that is part of the agreement. And if he has delivered the dividends of democracy for Rivers people, it is left for Rivers people to ask him to contest or not,” he added.
