Former Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Chijioke Ihunwo, has spoken out following an alleged assassination attempt on his life on Saturday in Rumueme, Obio Akpor LGA of Rivers State.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, Ihunwo said he narrowly escaped death while attending a burial. He expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life but strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an unacceptable act of violence.
“I call on security agencies to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Violence has no place in our society, and no one should be a target for simply engaging in lawful and peaceful activities,” Ihunwo said.
The former council boss also urged residents to remain committed to peace, justice, and the rule of law.
Ihunwo further raised concerns over a video circulating on social media in which alleged supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, were purportedly heard claiming responsibility for the attack. He alleged that the incident contradicts the peace efforts credited to the Minister, accusing his supporters of continuing violent attacks against loyalists of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
