The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Sir (Hon.) Allwell Ihunda, has disbursed financial grants of ₦100,000 each to over 500 women to boost and strengthen their Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) across the local government area.
The empowerment initiative, which took place in Port Harcourt, is aimed at supporting women-owned businesses, enhancing economic inclusion, and promoting sustainable livelihoods within the city. Beneficiaries drawn from various wards of the local government are engaged in diverse trades, including petty trading, food processing, fashion, and other small-scale ventures.
Speaking during the presentation of the grants, Ihunda said the programme underscores his administration’s commitment to empowering women economically and reducing poverty at the grassroots.
The mayor urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds judiciously to expand their businesses and improve their standard of living, assuring them of continued support through policies and programmes targeted at small business growth.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the mayor for the timely intervention, describing the grant as a major boost to their businesses amid prevailing economic challenges. They pledged to invest the funds responsibly to achieve meaningful growth.
The initiative forms part of the Port Harcourt City Local Government’s broader strategy to stimulate grassroots economic development and empower vulnerable groups, particularly women entrepreneurs.
