The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has confirmed that the continued stay in office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, is legal and in line with statutory provisions.
Egbetokun’s appointment, which took effect on October 31, 2023, was initially set to end upon his retirement at the age of 60 on September 4, 2024. However, amendments to the Police Act in 2024 have extended his tenure, allowing him to complete a full four-year term regardless of reaching the retirement age.
The AGF said according to section 7(6) of the amended Police Act, the IGP is entitled to serve a full tenure of four years from the date of appointment. Consequently, Egbetokun’s term now runs until October 31, 2027.
The AGF emphasized that this extension is lawful and necessary for public clarity, affirming that Egbetokun’s continued service complies fully with the amended legal framework.
