Abuja, Nigeria — The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting officers of the Nigeria Police Force from carrying rifles while dressed in civilian attire. He also warned against human rights violations by police personnel.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The directive came during a virtual meeting between the IGP and senior strategic managers at the Force Headquarters.
Egbetokun emphasized that the police had received numerous complaints about human rights abuses through its official complaint channels, prompting the need to caution officers against misconduct. He stressed the importance of professionalism and adherence to ethical standards in policing.
