Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has called on residents to nurture the seeds of peace, reconciliation, and love as the state transitions back to democratic governance.
Speaking at an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Ecumenical Center in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Ibas reminded political leaders, youths, and stakeholders that the progress and prosperity of Rivers State must take precedence over personal ambition and partisan rivalry.
“Politics must never be allowed to destroy the very state we are called to serve. Rivers State cannot afford another season of division and acrimony. Let us forgive, reconcile sincerely, and embrace tolerance,” he said.
The administrator credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention six months ago with restoring stability following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. He said the support of the president, combined with the resilience of Rivers people, helped to preserve lives, restore peace, and enable the successful conduct of local government elections.
“The seeds of reconciliation have been planted, but they must be nurtured deliberately if they are to take root. Our sacrifices and commitment to peace are treasures we must guard diligently,” Ibas added.
Addressing different groups, he urged youths to resist being used as instruments of violence, calling instead for them to channel their strength into building and creating. He also appealed to elders to continue guiding with wisdom and faith leaders to sustain prayers for the state.
Ibas expressed gratitude to God, the president, and Rivers residents for their patience and resilience during the transition period, stressing that peace remains the bedrock of progress.
“No political victory, no personal ambition, is worth the blood of our brothers and sisters. Where there is peace, there will be progress. Where there is love, prosperity will follow,” he said.
The thanksgiving service formed part of the official transition activities marking Rivers State’s return to democratic governance after months of emergency administration.
