Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has flagged off a state-wide flood sensitisation campaign to raise public awareness and strengthen preparedness against seasonal flooding.
Speaking at the launch held at the Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt, Ibas, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, disclosed that plans are underway to establish the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency to enhance disaster response and coordination.
He described the campaign as a crucial step toward mitigating the humanitarian and environmental impact of floods, which often displace families, destroy infrastructure, disrupt socio-economic activities, and threaten food security.
The sensitisation programme was organised by the Rivers State Committee on Flood Emergency Preparedness, Management, and Control, chaired by Prof. Worika. The committee comprises representatives from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies, and various state ministries.
Ibas tasked the committee to provide residents with actionable information, education, and preventive measures to help build community resilience and reduce the risks associated with flooding.
