Rita Daniels, mother of Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, has revealed that she never supported her daughter’s marriage to politician and businessman, Senator Ned Nwoko, from the beginning.
Her clarification resurfaced online amid renewed public attention following a viral video in which Regina allegedly accused her husband of domestic violence.
Speaking earlier with BBC News Igbo in an interview Rita Daniels addressed persistent rumours that she arranged or “sold” her daughter into marriage. She dismissed the claims, stating that she was the last person to know about Regina’s relationship with Nwoko.
“When Regina got married, the world said I forced her to marry a much older man and that I sold her to him,” Rita said. “What they did not know is that I didn’t even know when they started dating. With everything going on, I was the last person to know they were in a relationship.”
She explained that when she confronted Regina about the situation, her daughter became unusually defiant. “My daughter, who never used to throw back words at me, started doing so. I noticed she was getting stubborn, and I wondered what was happening,” she said. “In the political terrain, the husband and I are opponents.”
Rita further revealed that Nwoko did not approach her about marriage until after his political campaign. Faced with Regina’s determination to proceed with the union, she said she ultimately had little choice but to stand by her daughter.
