Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has said she has no intention of remarrying following the death of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing her decision as pragmatic rather than moralistic.
According to a newly unveiled biography of the late former president, Aisha Buhari made the remarks during a conversation with Dr Charles Omole, author of the book From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari.
“She will not remarry, she says, almost with a shrug,” the book quoted. “It is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one: she has grandchildren; one husband was enough.”
The 600-page biography, comprising 22 chapters, was unveiled on Monday at the State House, Abuja. It chronicles Buhari’s life journey from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, to his final moments in a London hospital in mid-July 2025.
The book further contextualised Aisha Buhari’s position as a rejection of cultural stereotypes often imposed on widows.
“In a culture that sometimes reads remarriage as betrayal or saintliness, her answer refuses both scripts. It is simply a woman naming the contours of her future,” the author noted.
Outlining the next phase of her life, the former First Lady said she intends to live a quieter public life, focusing on family, philanthropy and travel, away from the intensity of public office and political scrutiny.
