Channels Television anchor Seun Akinbaloye has declared he is “not afraid” of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following controversial remarks attributed to the minister.
Wike had reportedly said he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist over comments warning that a one-party system could undermine Nigeria’s democracy. The statement sparked widespread backlash, with Amnesty International condemning it as “reckless and violent language.”
Responding on Sunday, Akinbaloye stood by his position, stressing that democracy is at risk if electoral processes lack balance and competition. He clarified that his concerns were directed at all Nigerians, not any specific political group.
The broadcaster also disclosed that the minister later reached out to explain that his comments were not intended as perceived. However, Akinbaloye maintained that threats or violent rhetoric have no place in a democratic society.
He reaffirmed his stance, insisting he would not be intimidated and would continue to hold those in power accountable through his work, emphasizing that disagreements must never escalate into hostility or harm.
