The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has trained 100 youths from Ogoniland in Rivers State in seafaring skills as part of efforts to create alternative sources of livelihood and strengthen Nigeria’s Blue Economy sector.
The initiative forms part of the broader Ogoniland cleanup and remediation programme recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at Charkins Maritime Academy in Port Harcourt, HYPREP Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, said the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Blue Economy drive and HYPREP’s mandate to improve livelihoods in impacted communities.
Zabbey described the graduation of the trainees as a significant step in the agency’s mission to promote sustainable development and economic empowerment in Ogoniland.
He noted that HYPREP is adopting an integrated approach that connects its projects and interventions to long-term environmental sustainability and community development goals.
