The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has opened an investigation into Tuesday’s collapse of an overhead water tank at the newly commissioned Gwara Water Station in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A committee set up by the Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, has already visited the area to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the structural failure, which occurred just days after the facility was inaugurated to improve access to clean water in Ogoni communities.
Prof. Zabbey expressed sympathy to residents of Gwara and urged them to remain calm as the agency works swiftly to restore the damaged infrastructure and resume water distribution to affected areas.
Briefing journalists at HYPREP’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the Head of Communication, Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, said the agency is taking proactive steps to rectify the situation.
According to him, these steps include a thorough technical investigation, restructuring of the faulty installation, and restoring potable water supply to the five communities that were meant to benefit from the project.
