Barr. Henry Ekine of the Center for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has reacted to the invitation of soldiers to discipline students of the Community Secondary School, Rumuapara in Port Harcourt.
Ekine in a statement criticized the move stating that it is completely out of place.
He said assuming the students had gone riotous, what the principal would have done was to call the Police to calm the situation and not the military.
“One of the Fundamental Rights that is protected in our constitution is to the effect that every person, including children, shall be treated humanely and fairly, not tortured. There is no justification whatsoever for maltreating any person in a manner that will lessen the dignity of that human being,” he said.
“Specifically, Section 11 of the Child Rights Act states that no child should be treated in such manner that will undermine the dignity of that child,” he added.
