Human Rights Activist Prince Wiro has called on the Rivers State Police Command to commence a thorough investigation into the alleged defilement of two minors—an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy—by a man identified simply as Pasca, reportedly aged 45.
Sources disclosed that the investigation followed separate formal complaints lodged at the Nkpolu Police Division by Mrs. Ada, the mother of the 10-year-old boy, and Mr. Alex, the father of the 11-year-old girl, who alleged that the suspect abused their children.
Speaking with journalists, Wiro who is the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, confirmed that the case was reported to him by the parents of the affected children.
According to him, the father of the girl alleged that the suspect, described as his friend and former neighbour at Christ Apostolic Street, Mile 3 Diobu, had been abusing the child over a period of time.
He further claimed that the suspect allegedly carried out the acts both at the family residence and at his own home in the Pipeline axis of Egbelu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, often when the father was away at work.
Mr Wiro also stated that the mother of the 10-year-old boy, a former neighbour of the suspect, said she became aware of the incident after her son began complaining of persistent discomfort, which prompted further questioning and a report of alleged abuse spanning several months.
He added that the children were taken to the Nkpolu Police Division, where formal statements were recorded and medical examination forms were issued for hospital evaluation.
Commending the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Nkpolu Police Division for what he described as a meticulous handling of the matter, Mr Wiro called for a thorough and transparent investigation.
He, however, criticised certain individuals claiming to represent a landlords’ association in the Egbelu area for allegedly attempting to mediate the matter instead of immediately handing the suspect over to the police.
According to him, a meeting was reportedly arranged between the parents and the suspect, but the suspect failed to appear and has not been seen since.
Police authorities are expected to continue investigations and take appropriate action as the case unfolds.
