A Port Harcourt based Human Rights Activist, Henry Ekine has blasted the Rivers State Government for turning the state’s isolation centre at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium into an illegal detention centre.
Ekine made this known in a chat with news correspondents today in Port Harcourt. He said the act is illegal and worrisome as it is not backed by any law.
The activist equally stated that the arbitrary order of the state governor to arrest defaulters of the executive order is unlawful. There are agencies saddled with such responsibilities under the constitution. These agencies like the Police, EFCC and others have legal detention centres, he noted.
It is a known fact that defaulters of the state government’s COVID-19 directives have been arrested and taken to the Isolation centre, at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt. A development, Ekine says is illegal and unlawful. He called on stakeholders to condemn the act.
