Hello Elanhub Virtual Book Club members!!!
These are the five books that are up for selection this week. As is detailed in our welcome pack, members are to decide on books to be read via a simple vote.
Here’s a short guide/preview to aid your choice.
- Nearly All Men In Lagos Are Mad by Damilare Kuku
A collection of short stories, structured as case-studies, and a form of love letter in solidarity with the women who have survived romantic relationships in Lagos.
- To Kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee
To Kill a Mockingbird is both a young girl’s coming-of-age story and a darker drama about the roots and consequences of racism and prejudice, probing how good and evil can coexist within a society or an individual.
3. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
This is a psychological thriller book in which a woman named Alicia murders her husband, then becomes completely silent through psychological treatment, in which her doctor, Theo, is obsessed with uncovering her motive.
4. The fortune Men by Nadifa Mohammed
The Fortune Men is a non-fiction novel that semi-fictionalises the true story of Mahmood Hussein Mattan, a Somali former merchant seaman who was executed after being wrongfully convicted of the 6 March 1952 murder of Lily Volpert (renamed Violet Volacki in the book) in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay.
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, a little girl who is taken to a new home because her mother can’t afford to take care of her. The story is told by Death, who becomes a character you come to respect and even feel sorry for by the end.
As you may have noticed, the listed books feature African, Western, and Middle-Eastern authors.
Also note that, a short session will be held this week on how to read for long hours and our host/guest is Dr. Sarah Chidiebere Joe – a Lecturer and Head of Department, Development Communication Studies, Rivers State University. She is also the TeamLead, ELANHUB MEDIA.
