The boy once known for handing out money to prison inmates on the streets of Lagos has now graduated as a lawyer.
Ekuma Jeremiah Iziogo, popularly called Jerry the Hawker, became an internet sensation in January 2022 when a viral video captured him sharing ₦100 notes with inmates inside a Nigerian Correctional Service van in Ajah. At the time, Jerry was hawking bottled water to survive after dropping out of Ebonyi State University, where he had been studying law.
His act of kindness drew national attention and caught the eye of billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Obinna Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana. During a live broadcast with media personality Ifedayo Olarinde (Daddy Freeze), Cubana promised to sponsor Jerry’s education through to postgraduate level if he wished.
With Cubana’s financial support and mentorship, Jerry’s admission at Ebonyi State University was restored, allowing him to resume his studies.
Three years later, Jerry has successfully graduated with a law degree as part of the Class of 2025. Celebrating the achievement on Instagram, Obi Cubana wrote:
“On 19th January 2022 when the offers were placed before you, you chose education! You made the best choice, today you are a 2025 law graduate!! … Congratulations Jerry, the world is yours!!!”
