A group of unidentified armed assailants on Wednesday attacked a joint police patrol team along the Abatete–Eziowelle Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack caused panic in the area as a gun battle reportedly broke out between the police operatives and the attackers.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen set a patrol vehicle ablaze and injured one of the officers during the assault.
According to PUNCH, one witness, the assailants — who were heavily armed — ambushed operatives from the Department of Operations, State Headquarters, Awka, and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad while they were on routine surveillance.
The attackers were said to have operated in a convoy consisting of a white Toyota Hummer bus, a black Lexus 350 SUV, and a white Toyota Highlander, all without identifiable registration numbers. They reportedly wore uniforms resembling those of military and police personnel during the operation.
