Gunmen have attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving two people dead and others injured.
Fred Chukwuelobe, former press secretary, to Ngige confirmed the incident in a statement.
According to reports, the assailants, disguised in police and military uniforms, ambushed the convoy and opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the vehicle was killed, after which the gunmen allegedly took his rifle and uniform. A woman who was said to be recording the incident on her phone was also shot dead.
A shop owner who stepped out to see what was happening was caught in the gunfire and sustained serious injuries.
Dr Ngige was not present in the convoy during the attack.
The Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official reaction.
