Panic gripped residents of Nawfia in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday after unknown gunmen launched a violent attack near the Afor Market Junction, leaving an unspecified number of people feared dead.
Witnesses said the assailants stormed the area and opened fire on unsuspecting residents, triggering chaos as people ran for safety. Several victims were reportedly hit by bullets, though the exact casualty figure had yet to be confirmed at press time.
According to PUNCH, a community source who spoke on the incident, said the sudden assault has left locals traumatised. “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; the attack has left our community shaken,” the source said.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
