Gunmen suspected to be cultists have abducted about five students of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworokwu, Port Harcourt, from their off-campus residence in Emuoha Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the armed attackers stormed the Rumuchi/Rumuohia area in the early hours of Tuesday, shooting sporadically before whisking the victims away to an unknown location.
She noted that the police have already deployed tactical units to track down the suspects and secure the safe release of the students. “We have put efforts in place for their safe rescue. As I speak, the Commissioner of Police is on ground with tactical teams to ensure they regain their freedom,” Iringe-Koko said.
Authorities added that additional measures are being taken to improve security in the affected communities, including a town hall meeting involving the council leadership, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, and security agencies to enhance the safety of students and residents in the area.
