The Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative has called on residents of Rivers State to boycott the proposed local government elections, citing concerns over the legality of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) as currently constituted.
Addressing reporters, the group’s coordinator, Courage Nsirimovu, argued that the Sole Administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), lacks the constitutional mandate to establish an electoral commission.
Nsirimovu stressed that the administrator’s role is limited to maintaining peace and order, not organizing elections, warning that any poll conducted under the current RSIEC would violate the rule of law and constitute a misuse of public funds.
