The Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP), a civil society organisation, has announced the commencement of a recall process against 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who endorsed the impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The group disclosed this in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and signed by its secretary, Tonye Jaja. In the letter, ALDRAP requested the release of certified true copies of the voters’ register for all state constituencies in Rivers State to enable it to proceed with the recall exercise.
ALDRAP stated that several of its members are constituents of the affected lawmakers and are therefore constitutionally empowered to initiate their recall. The notice specifically targets the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, alongside 25 other legislators who signed the impeachment notice dated January 8, 2026.
The association criticised the lawmakers’ actions, describing them as confrontational and contrary to the February 2025 judgment of the Supreme Court, which urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to maintain peaceful coexistence with the governor and prioritise amicable dispute resolution.
ALDRAP further noted that the situation was made more concerning by the fact that both Governor Fubara and the legislators involved belong to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the group, internal party mechanisms for resolving disagreements should have been fully explored before resorting to impeachment proceedings.
