The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the abduction of one of its young members, Onyesom Peace Udoka, and her sister, along the Lokoja–Okene highway in Kogi State.
Udoka, a newly called lawyer, was reportedly kidnapped alongside her sister while returning from the recent Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Saturday, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), described the incident as “unacceptable and utterly condemnable,” noting that it was tragic for young lawyers and their families to be subjected to such ordeals at a time meant for celebration.
“No family should have to endure this trauma, and no citizen should live under the constant fear of insecurity on our roads,” Osigwe said.
The association called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly to ensure the immediate and safe release of Udoka, her sister, and all others held in captivity.
“The safety and security of Nigerians cannot continue to be treated with levity. It is the primary duty of government to protect lives, and this duty must be discharged with the seriousness it deserves,” the NBA emphasized.
The body also urged authorities to intensify efforts in securing highways across the country to restore public confidence in the government’s capacity to safeguard citizens.
Expressing solidarity with the victims’ families, the NBA prayed for the safe return of Udoka, her sister, and all abducted persons.
