The Rivers State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to challenge a controversial ruling by a state High Court barring its executives from identifying as party officials in the state.
The State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Kenneth Wiyoka, criticized the decision delivered by Justice Stephen Jumbo, labeling it a “kangaroo judgment” during an interview.
He noted that a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had previously permitted the party to proceed with its congresses. Wiyoka questioned the basis for a lower court’s restraining order, especially when it was issued without notifying the party, effectively denying them a chance to respond.
Wiyoka urged party members to remain calm, assuring them that legal action is underway to appeal the judgment. “We call on our members at all levels to stay calm. Our lawyers are working on this, and we will definitely appeal the judgment as a law-abiding party,” he said.
Addressing concerns about Governor Sim Fubara’s loyalty to the party, Wiyoka emphasized that the governor remains a PDP member despite recent actions causing confusion within the party. “He was elected on the PDP platform, and we supported him. While his recent actions raise questions, he is still a member of the party,” he affirmed.
The PDP reassured its members that the party remains steadfast and committed to addressing the legal challenges.
