Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has donated ₦50 million to widows of soldiers who lost their lives in service to the nation. The announcement was made on January 15 during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day commemoration in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the event, Governor Fubara highlighted the state’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of the armed forces, describing the donation as a gesture of gratitude to support the families of the fallen heroes.
“This fund will be disbursed immediately to assist these widows with urgent needs, including school fees, rent, and small business support,” he stated.
The governor praised the courage and dedication of Nigeria’s military personnel in defending the nation’s sovereignty amid ongoing security challenges. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of both serving and retired military personnel through targeted social programs.
The Acting State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State Command, Kuu A. Promise, commended the governor’s support, describing it as a lifeline for veterans and their families. He appealed to the government to construct a permanent office for the Nigerian Legion at the Isaac Boro Park Military Cenotaph, a site dedicated to honoring the fallen.
The event concluded with prayers for the families of the fallen soldiers and a renewed call for national unity and peace.
