Nigerian gospel artist Mercy Chinwo and her husband have been accused of orchestrating the recent arrest of social media activist VeryDarkMan, according to Nollywood producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop.
Ajemba made the allegations in an Instagram post on Sunday, disputing widespread reports that the arrest was carried out by officials of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank). He claimed instead that Chinwo was behind the arrest, which was executed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“GTBank is not responsible for VDM’s arrest at their premises. Mercy Chinwo is responsible for the arrest,” Ajemba wrote. “Church is another government agency that uses our police, EFCC or military to intimidate citizens.”
VeryDarkMan was taken into custody by EFCC operatives on Friday, May 2, after accompanying his mother to a GTBank branch to lodge a complaint over unauthorized deductions from her bank account.
Neither Mercy Chinwo nor the EFCC has publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
