The Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, has declared zero tolerance for student exploitation, including extortion and sex-for-grades practices.
The Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Don Baridam, issued the warning on Wednesday during the university’s maiden matriculation ceremony and founders’ day lecture.
Prof. Baridam stressed that the institution, as a newly established centre of learning, must protect its reputation and uphold high ethical standards. He cautioned that any lecturer or non-teaching staff found engaging in misconduct capable of damaging the university’s image would be dismissed.
He urged staff members to relate with students responsibly and support their academic growth, advising them to see the pioneer undergraduates as their own children and mentor them toward successful careers.
The Pro-Chancellor also specifically warned against exploitative practices such as the compulsory sale of handouts and any form of inappropriate demands from students, insisting that such behavior would not be condoned by the university administration.
