The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has described the defection of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to the party as a significant political development, saying it strengthens the APC’s foothold in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yilwatda made the remark on Wednesday evening when Governor Fubara paid a visit to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, days after formally leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor, who defected to the APC on December 9, was accompanied by the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, and was received by members of the party’s National Working Committee led by the APC chairman.
Details of the meeting were made available to journalists on Thursday.
According to the APC leadership, the defection is viewed as completing the political alignment of the South-South region with the ruling party, positioning it strongly ahead of the next general elections.
During the meeting, Governor Fubara and APC leaders expressed commitment to working together to ensure electoral victories for the party at all levels, including securing a second-term mandate for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Fubara’s move from the PDP to the APC has been widely interpreted as a major political realignment with potential implications for the balance of power ahead of the 2027 polls.
