Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced plans to expand infrastructure and economic activities in Bonny Local Government Area, describing the kingdom as a strategic global economic hub that requires a stronger presence of the state government.
The governor spoke on Saturday in Bonny while attending the Iria Ceremony of Her Royal Highness, Queen Paula Tamunoipirinye Pepple, wife of the Amanyanabo of Bonny, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III. The colourful ceremony took place at Ikuba Square and attracted traditional rulers, chiefs and other key stakeholders.
Governor Fubara said Bonny’s expansion demands improved internal road networks, shoreline protection projects to address erosion, and initiatives to stimulate local economic activities, especially to complement the operations of multinational firms such as Nigeria LNG (NLNG).
He assured residents that before the end of the first quarter of 2026, they would see and feel a stronger presence of the Rivers State Government in Bonny.
During the event, the governor was conferred with the traditional title of Amaopu Senibo of Grand Bonny, which he described as a call to greater responsibility and service to the people of Bonny and Rivers State.
Governor Fubara praised the leadership style of King Edward Pepple III, noting the monarch’s emphasis on humility, service and legacy.
In his remarks, the monarch said the reception was organised to take advantage of the governor’s visit for the Iria Ceremony, urging him to follow up on the concerns and requests presented by the Bonny Chiefs’ Council. He disclosed that the council had resolved to honour the governor with the highest traditional title of the ancient kingdom
