Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the Secretary to the State Government to commence the employment process for 50 wards of legionnaires and fallen heroes, in fulfilment of an earlier commitment by the state government.
The Governor also called on the private sector, corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals to complement government efforts by providing scholarships and employment opportunities for veterans and their dependants, stressing the need for collective responsibility in caring for those who sacrificed for the nation.
Governor Fubara gave the directives during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Isaac Boro Park Cenotaph in Port Harcourt.
In his remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Rivers State, ACC Kuu Aminkipo Promise, expressed gratitude to the Governor for sponsoring the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony, describing the event as historic. He particularly commended the Rivers State Government for the N100 million donation made in support of legionnaires and their welfare. He also offered prayers for divine wisdom and guidance for the Governor in the task of governance.
Earlier, Governor Fubara led other dignitaries to the wreath-laying ceremony, where he inspected a guard of honour mounted by personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Nigerian Legion.
The Governor, alongside his Deputy, the Chief Judge of the state, service chiefs and the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, laid wreaths in honour of the nation’s fallen heroes.
The ceremony concluded with the release of a pigeon, symbolising peace and national unity.
