Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has urged stakeholders across the South-South region to deepen collaboration and intelligence sharing to enhance peace and security.
Governor Fubara made the call on Thursday at the South-South Zonal Public Hearing on National Security organised by the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, held in Port Harcourt. The Governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba.
He noted that ensuring the safety of lives and property requires collective responsibility, stressing that security should not be seen as the exclusive duty of government.
“Security is not the business of Government alone, but a shared responsibility and concern of every person,” he stated.
Fubara said his administration has consistently supported federal security efforts through the provision of operational vehicles, boats, aircraft, accommodation and welfare support for personnel and the Nigerian Legion. He described the summit as timely, given the lingering security issues plaguing the South-South, which negatively impact national revenue, the environment, and community safety.
He called on participants to adopt a bottom-up approach in their contributions, taking into account the region’s unique coastal terrain, which serves as a gateway to the Gulf of Guinea.
The Governor assured that Rivers State would continue to strengthen partnerships with security agencies and neighbouring states through intelligence sharing, youth empowerment, and community participation to sustain peace.
Chairman of the South-South Security Summit and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Patrick Moro, said the forum was convened to collectively diagnose and address the complex security challenges confronting the nation.
He explained that the summit provides a platform for frank discussions aimed at developing workable solutions, noting that successful security interventions must be guided by local realities
