The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Rivers State says it will intensify its enforcement and sensitization campaigns against the sale and consumption of sachet alcoholic drinks in motor parks as the federal government moves to implement a nationwide ban starting January 1, 2026.
Sector Commander, Inyang Umoh, disclosed this at the weekend while outlining measures the Corps will deploy to curb drunk-driving during the festive season. He warned that drivers caught consuming alcohol or operating vehicles under the influence will face strict penalties.
“We have what we call alcoholizers, which measure the alcohol content in a driver’s blood. Beyond that, we conduct physical tests and also use digital alcoholizers to detect those who are on alcohol,” Umoh said.
He noted that the FRSC will increase monitoring in parks and on major routes to deter drivers from engaging in drinking and driving, especially as travel activities rise toward the end of the year.
Speaking on delays in the issuance of driver’s licences, Umoh assured that the Corps is taking steps to streamline the process to ensure applicants receive their licences within a reasonable timeframe.
