The Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to the site of a fresh oil spill in Kpean community, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, will now take place today following an earlier postponement.
Spokesperson of the National Coalition on Oil Pollution (NACOP) in the area, Ken Nna, confirmed this in an interview with our correspondent. He said officials from NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) had visited the community earlier, accompanied by senior management staff of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).
The team met with the community’s council of chiefs and assured residents that the JIV would be conducted today.
Nna also disclosed that a fire had erupted at the spill site due to pressure from the affected oil well. Meanwhile, a chief from the neighbouring community, Koko Teeraue, has called on authorities to ensure the exercise is not subjected to further delays.
