MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised. Adonijah shall be put to death this day”. (1kgs.2:24)
READ: 1 KINGS 2:18-25
18 And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king. 19 Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand. 20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay. 21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife. 22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah. 23 Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life. 24 Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day. 25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
The death of Adonijah meant so much to Solomon and his throne. Choosing to terminate the life of this member of opposition was not just an act of wickedness or out pouring of malice; it was necessary for the establishment and stability of the throne. When Jonah entered the ship going to Tarsus, in disobedience to the Lord, he was not only endangering his life, but the lives of all those that came in contact with him. The innocent sailors lost their goods and would have lost their lives if they had not thrown Jonah into the water. Sometimes we suffer terrible pains and misfortunes just because we want to be more righteous than God.
Adonijah’s desire for the throne was expressed by his request to have Abishag. This damsel was David’s wife before his death. Adonijah having her means he was inheriting part of the throne. Who knows what he would have asked for or schemed to get the next time? Knowing the right way to deal with every opposition is the beginning of success in every area of life. After the death of Adonijah, there was no record of oppositions from any other member of David’s family or from Judah at large. You may not need to kill the Adonijah of your own destiny. You may only need to separate from them. Other Adonijahs of your destiny may be dream killers. So all you do is to keep your dreams to yourself until they are matured. Wisdom is the principal thing in dealing with every Adonijah of your destiny.
TURNING POINT: Lord, grant me the wisdom today to deal with every Adonijah appropriately.
PRAYER POINT: Lord, deliver me from every conspiracy of Adonijah.
