Fresh Manna 13 October
MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “And he said, speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the King, (for he will not say thee nay), that he gave Abishag the Shunnamite to wife”. (1kgs.2:17)
READ: 1 KINGS 2:13-17
13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably. 14 He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on. 15 And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD. 16 And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on. 17 And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
According to the preacher “Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom, but a man of understanding walketh uprightly”. The opposite of folly is prudence. “Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge but a fool layeth open his folly (Pro.13:16). Adonijah’s request to have Abishag, David’s younger wife demonstrated the folly of his heart. From this request, it is obvious that Adonijah still had his eyes on the throne even though he had bowed and congratulated Solomon as the new king. It is possible that in his folly, he did not know that Solomon will decode his evil intentions and respond to him appropriately.
Dear reader, there are so many Adonijahs around your life. They may be your colleagues in the office, your neighbors and even sometimes family members. They are interested in what you have. And since they cannot get it by force, they devise some cunning means of breaking your defence to steal your joy. Adonijah knew that Solomon had a soft spot for his mother so he decided to use her. Thank God for King Solomon who never allowed mother and son sentiments to play on him. Adonijah escaped the first time but this time he had to pay the supreme price. The folly of the fool is his destruction. Guard your heart; check your desires, because wrong desires will always lead to wrong actions and destruction.
TURNING POINT: Guard your heart; check your desires, because wrong desires will always lead to wrong actions and destruction.
PRAYER POINT: Dear Lord, help me to walk in wisdom always so that I will not give my heart to wrong desires.
