Former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, has issued an apology to the Ijaw ethnic group following controversial remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, during a recent media chat.
Ihunwo condemned Wike’s statements, describing them as divisive and capable of fueling ethnic tensions. He argued that the Ikwerre ethnic group had governed Rivers State for 16 years and should allow other groups a fair chance at leadership. He warned that any attempt to disregard the principle of equity could lead to political instability in the state.
The former council chairman also criticized the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly for allegedly preventing Governor Siminalayi Fubara from presenting the 2025 Appropriation Bill. He accused Amaewhule of attempting to assume governorship through unconstitutional means, vowing that such efforts would be resisted.
Declaring that “nobody can remove Governor Fubara,” Ihunwo urged Rivers residents to remain steadfast in their support for the governor.
Additionally, he praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts in strengthening national security but cautioned him against certain members of his cabinet. He specifically accused Wike of undermining the president’s governance agenda.
