Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Malami announced his defection on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in a personally signed statement, explaining that his decision was motivated by a deep concern for the worsening economic and social conditions in the country.
“This is not about bitterness or personal ambition,” he said, “but about love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily. Nigeria is bleeding.”
His defection comes as part of a broader realignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections. Malami is now aligned with a growing coalition that includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi—both of whom are backing the ADC as a new opposition front to challenge the APC.
He expressed confidence that the coalition under the ADC banner could help redirect the country toward a more promising future.
