PRESS RELEASE
The Rainbow Watch and Development Centre has called on the Rivers State Government to be prepared to mitigate the impact of flooding in various communities across the state. The centre made the demand in view of the predicted increase in rainfall this year, which is expected to result in flash floods in some parts of the state.
According to the Executive Director of the centre, Mr. Michael Lenee Gbarale, the government needs to take prompt action to prevent loss of lives and property that could result from flooding. He emphasized the need for early intervention and deployment of necessary equipment and personnel to promptly evacuate affected people to safe shelters.
The Rainbow Watch and Development Centre further called on residents of flood-prone areas to take necessary precautions, including relocation to safer areas and proper disposal of waste, to prevent blockage of drainage channels and other waterways. The centre also urged the state government to embark on sustained dredging of rivers and waterways to facilitate smooth flow of water during heavy rainfall.
In conclusion, the Rainbow Watch and Development Centre called on all stakeholders, including local government councils, emergency response agencies, and non-governmental organizations, to work together with the state government to mitigate the impact of flooding in the state.
