At least five Nigerian soldiers have been killed following a suicide bomb attack in Pulka town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to Daily Trust, rrsidents and security sources confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday morning at a military checkpoint in the area. A security source said, the attacker was suspected to be a member of the Islamic State–West African Province (ISWAP) who had been hiding in the Mandara Mountains.
The source disclosed that the bomber allegedly spent the night near the checkpoint, carefully planning the attack. When the road was opened to civilians in the morning, he reportedly disguised himself as a passerby before detonating the explosive device among the soldiers, killing five of them instantly.
A resident of the community described the attack as alarming, noting that it was the first suicide bombing recorded in the area in over a year. The resident stressed that the incident underscores the need for a revised security strategy to prevent a recurrence and strengthen safety around critical security installations.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack, as investigations continue.
