The Federal Government has announced plans to engage retired military officers in community policing to reclaim ungoverned areas where terrorists and bandits have been operating.
Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, disclosed the initiative on Wednesday in Abuja during a press briefing marking the start of activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The programme, named “Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P),” will utilize the expertise of retired veterans to restore security and promote development in affected communities.
Badaru explained that the veterans will also spearhead farming and mining projects in secured areas, aiming to prevent the return of terrorism, create jobs, and enhance national unity. A special committee is finalizing the operational framework for the programme, which will also provide long-term support for veterans nationwide.
In a related development, the Ministry of Defence has launched a digital platform called the “Thank A Soldier” QR Code, enabling Nigerians to send messages of appreciation to active personnel and honour fallen heroes. The minister encouraged citizens to recognise the courage and discipline of military personnel protecting the nation.
Badaru highlighted the achievements of troops under President Tinubu’s administration, noting that over 13,000 terrorists and criminals have been neutralized, 17,000 suspects arrested, 10,000 hostages rescued, and 1,900 illegal refining sites destroyed. More than 100,000 Boko Haram and ISWAP members and their families have surrendered, major terrorist camps have been cleared, and many displaced persons have returned home.
The minister also outlined plans to support veterans through digital initiatives, including the creation of a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre to improve communication and welfare. Additionally, the Nigerian Legion Act is set to be reviewed and renamed the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) to strengthen legal support for veterans’ benefits and reintegration.
